Kaman Industrial Technologies is a diversified $1 billion company providing high technology products and services, with nearly 200 branches and major regional distribution centers and over 25 years in the business. Kaman is a distributor of bearings, power transmission, materials handling, components and systems and associated products with a catalogue spanning 1.4 parts. In 1999, Kaman decided to opt for an e-commerce site to service its industry. KamanDirect.com is an e-commerce solution to meet Kaman's need for an online product catalogue from where Kaman's business customers are allowed to shop at the site using purchase orders, review their accounts online and it also provides an accurate reflection of inventory to the customer.

The Challenge

Kaman provides a wide range of products and systems related to bearings, mechanical and electrical power transmission, motion control, material handling, and fluid power for the MRO and OEM markets. When Kaman's clients need to place orders, they go to Kaman's nearest branch office and place their orders via the Kaman Information System (KIS). KIS is an open VM based system, and is the main computerized system, connected to all Kaman branches located in various parts of the United States. In the nature of Kaman's business, the needs of suppliers and customers were Kaman's inherent problem.
Kaman approached Techlogix and Informix to develop a web-based version of their 1.4 million SKU catalog. Kaman needed to have a more convenient, readily accessible and expeditious mode of handling orders, and this system had to integrate with Kaman's legacy environment, KIT.
 

The Solution:

Kaman Direct is an e-commerce website solution designed for Kaman Industrial Technology to enable their customers to buy products online rather than visiting a branch. From a platform perspective, this system is implemented in Informix's latest RAD e-commerce Framework - i.Sell.
 Its benefits are:
• Facility of browsing 1.4 million products.
• User registrations, updating, login/logout.
• Shopping cart
• A complete check out process
• Facility of checking order status
• Invoice details
• Shipping history
• Diverse payment methods: credit card, COD, bill to customer

This site is holding the complete product catalog of approximately 1.4 million parts. All of Kaman's prospective clients have online access to details and descriptions regarding the products. Most of the information that is available on this site is taken from KIS at run time or as per required basis. For example product prices, availability info, shipping history etc. come from KIS. To get all this information from KIS, ISG Navigator (a third party tool) is used as a bridge for communication between legacy KIS system and the Kaman direct web application. When this web application requires information from the legacy system it calls the appropriate queries on the exposed legacy system interfaces through ISG Navigator. The results from the legacy system are then collected and sent back to the web application through ISG Navigator.
