Pakistan Wins 3 Golds, 6 Silvers at APICTA 2016

Pakistan finished 4th in the overall awards count, ahead of economic powerhouses Australia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan and China.

(Taipei, Taiwan – December 5, 2016) – The Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT & ITES (P@SHA) announced this afternoon that Team Pakistan has won 3 Gold Awards and 6 Silver Awards at the Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) 2016 ceremony held in Taipei, Taiwan today.

Leading the way with the Golds were a young team from NUST for their project ‘Clinical Decision Support System for Diagnosis of Movement Disorders’, another team from NUST who collaborated with CASE, AFIO and Biomisa for their Research and Development project ‘Analysis of Optical Coherence Tomography Image for CDSS’ and Wondertree, a startup from P@SHA’s Tech Incubator The Nest i/o who won in the Inclusion and Community Category.

The Silver awards were bagged by Amin Farid for his chatbot school project on Conversation Engineering and Mr. Higgins, NUST for their project Sionser, UBL Fund Managers for their financial product imPro, Trillium Information Systems for their Security product T-Eye and two startups of The Nest i/o - MandiExpress and Sheops.

To bring innovation by Pakistani IT companies to the forefront, P@SHA took a delegation of 41 people to Taipei for the 16th annual APICTA Awards, a four day event that is deemed as the Oscars night for the Asia Pacific ICT arena. 28 teams from Pakistan competed against 236 from 17 economies across the Asia Pacific and were judged by 60+ seasoned professionals.

This delegation also included 9 teams who are alumni of P@SHA’s Tech Incubator, The Nest i/o. The regional Awards ceremony invites applications from 17 economies, including Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, China, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Nepal and Pakistan.

Participants representing Pakistan were winners and runners-up at P@SHA’s flagship ICT Awards Program 2016 and were widely applauded for their performance against an extremely talented pool of competitors. The judging was done by industry veterans, tech professionals and renowned thought leaders and VCs from all across the Asia Pacific region.

Speaking on the occasion, Jehan Ara President of P@SHA said, “P@SHA showcases the true potential and diverse talent of the ICT industry time and again by providing them a platform like the P@SHA ICT Awards and paving way for them to compete and win against companies and products that are deemed the best in the region. All credit goes to the hard work put in by these teams and the efforts of mentors and judges who have been working with them all individually since October.” Judges from Pakistan included Jawwad A. Farid, Badar Khushnood, Dr Shoab Khan, Sultan Hamdani and Jehan Ara.

This year Team Pakistan’s performance was once again dominated by young people.  With the support of its partners and sponsors, The Nest i/o was able to take a number of young teams from its current and previous cohorts of startups to give them a unique chance to meet and form potential partnerships with industry veterans in the region and attract business opportunities and possible investment for their respective ventures.

The international judges were all praise for the teams from Pakistan and commented that even the youngest of teams had shown the caliber of work being done by the Pakistan tech sector.

Product: Clinical Decision Support System for Diagnosis of Movement Disorders

Category: Tertiary Student Project

This product is an integration of hardware and software that accurately collects data samples from patient’s hand tremors and analyzes it to give doctors support in their clinical decision making.

Product: Analysis of Optical Coherence Tomography Image for CDSS

Category: Research and Development

The product offers the capabilities of a self-diagnosis system to auto diagnosis of different complications of macular and ocular pathology. The objective is to prevent sudden blindness or vision loss by providing an easy to access service to remote area patients all over Pakistan.
